Scatterlings
Free VerseWritten in late 2025, this short poem was based in the thought why we consider butterflies the main stage of their life cycle, like with many insects, when their so-called larval stage is the one they spend most of their lives in.
Add to that the rich list of dialectal and outdated words the English language (and, in fact, many languages) has for butterflies, and you get a simple yet poetic observation about language, what words we use for things, and how our perception warps reality, sometimes wilfully so.
Waiting for a place to publish or display it, I finally decided to include it in my Fall 2026 exhibit of poems in the ParkhausArt Gallery in Moenchengladbach-Rheydt, Germany, where I was (and still am as of the latest update of this site) part of the organizing team of artists. There, it was surrounded by a collection of origami butterflies displaying some of the words this refers to.
